In addition to the advice to leave them loose, free  during the night, there is other important information:

A) always sleep with dry hair because i  wet hair is more sensitive, breaks more easily and can  be susceptible to fungi

B) brushing/combing adequately prevents this  during night movements the hair becomes more tangled

C) apply a small amount of oil or  leave-in cream to leave them softer, thus avoiding friction with the  cushion and various fabrics
